Over 70 articles were published here on the Bipolar Burble blog in 2013. Some were hits and some not so much. So today I’d like to look back at two top 5 lists: the most-read bipolar blog articles of 2013 and the most talked-about bipolar blog articles of 2013.

The Most-Read Bipolar Blog Articles of 2013

Here’s what you were reading on this bipolar blog that was written in 2013:

  1. How a Person with Bipolar Thinks – this bipolar blog article went viral and contributed to the greatest number of pages views in a single day on the Bipolar Burble. If you haven’t read it yet, you might be the only one. This post outlines the quirky ways in which the bipolar brain thinks including obsession, anxiety, distraction, overreaction and other thought patterns.
  2. Can You Treat Bipolar Disorder without Medication? – this bipolar blog post has been popular since it has been written both with direct visitors and by people searching for information on the topic. Here I outline some of the non-medication ways to treat bipolar depression.
  3. Is Something Wrong with You if You Think of Killing Yourself? – this bipolar blog article was written in response to a search query I received. I thought people should understand that thinking of killing your self doesn’t make you “bad,” or a “freak,” in fact, it makes you pretty human.
  4. I Want to Attempt Suicide and Not Die – this bipolar blog post was also written based on search queries received by the Bipolar Burble. I thought it was important to address people who are so desperate that they actually want a suicide attempt on their record just to get the help they need. It’s very sad, very real and it doesn’t have to be this way.
  5. More Worst Things to Say to a Person with Bipolar – Isn’t Everyone a Little Bipolar? – I wrote a bipolar post on the worst things to say to a person with bipolar disorder that was very popular, but naturally was not all-inclusive as to the things we hear every day. Here’s something people say that really dismisses what it’s really like to have bipolar disorder, insults us and ticks me the heck off.

The Most Talked-About Bipolar Blog Posts of 2013

Popular Bipolar Articles of 2013Sometimes I’m a wee bit contraversial; you might have heard that somewhere. For that reason, some of my posts attract a lot of feedback, both pro and con. Here are the bipolar posts that have the all-time greatest number of comments:

  1. When You Leave Someone with a Mental Illness – as controversial now as the day I wrote it, this bipolar blog post talks about taking care of oneself removing a person with a mental illness from one’s life. I’ve gotten a lot of hate-mail over it, but I consider it even-handed and reasonable, if extremely heart-breaking and unfortunate.
  2. Saying Goodbye to Someone with a Mental Illness – I’m extremely sad to say that the number two talked-about bipolar post is on a similar subject. It’s extremely sad but many people identify with the idea that a person in their life needs to be removed for everyone’s own good. I realize this is depressing for those of us with a mental illness, but you have to understand that these cases are the gut-wrenching exception and not the rule.
  3. I’m Too Tired to Keep Fighting Bipolar Disorder – while the title of this popular bipolar blog article may sound depressing, really it’s not. This post is all about addressing that fatigue and handling it, knowing that we must continue to fight and move forward with bipolar disorder.
  4. Psychiatric Myths Dispelled by Doctor – Fighting Antipsychiatry – putting the word “antipsychiatry” in any bipolar post tends to tick off a bunch of people, just like here, but in this case, it’s actually a doctor refuting antipsychiatry rhetoric and not me.
  5. No Hospitalization After a Suicide Attempt – this bipolar blog post outlines what I consider to be a tragedy – a case wherein a person who attempted suicide was turned away from admittance to the hospital. I believe it elucidates our standing as second class citizens, even in the eyes of professional healthcare workers.

FYI: The above posts are all older, which isn’t surprising as that’s how comments gather – over time. But the bipolar post from 2013 with the greatest number of comments was Should You Go Public about your Bipolar Online.
