off-label – bipolar memoir excerpt published

December 8, 2010 Bipolar blog book writing z_features

As most of my long-term readers know, I’ve written a memoir, and like so many memoirs it has been sitting in a virtual drawer in a virtual desk in a virtual office. I’ve been querying agents, naturally, but the odds of finding an agent this way are astronomically not in my favor. An agent might receive thousands of queries a year and accept only one. Yeah, it’s a tough game this writing thing. And of course, even if I’m lucky enough to get an agent, they still have to find me a publisher. It’s long. It’s arduous.

So I’m doing what all good writers do, I’m drinking and sitting in a dark room ruminating on my worthlessness.

OK, I’m not doing that. Instead, I’m trying to build a platform on which I can launch my own book or attract the eye of a publisher or agent. So it’s all about getting my writing out there in as many venues as possible and Tweeting and Facebooking my way to fullfillment.

And a couple of days ago I was fortunate enough to bump into Hyla Molander – the author of Drop Dead Life a book about her struggles when her 29-year-old husband dropped dead of a heart attack when she was 7 months pregnant. You should check out Hyla Molander’s writing excerpts.

Hyla liked my writing, “a powerful voice and authenticity that just floors me.”

I’m honored.

So she suggested I post a short excerpt of my memoir on I didn’t know anything about this site, but is a place for writers to post their work and for you to find hot, new writers, now including me. Now you can read an excerpt from Off-Label: an unbalanced look at a bipolar life on By having an excerpt on I’m hoping to attract the attention of an agent or a publisher as this is what happened for Hyla.

If you like my writing and would like to see it reach a wider audience, talk about me. Go read my excerpt and share it on Facebook and Twitter and anywhere else you fancy. I need lots of people and lots of support to become more attractive to the people who can help me bring my book to a store near you. Hyla’s support has started me off on the right foot, now I just need your help to keep it going.
