As many of you know I’m writing a book on electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). This book will hopefully answer all the questions a person might have before undergoing ECT treatment as well as share with them my personal experience and the experience of others.
And I’ve decided to include, at the back of the book a list of hospitals that offer ECT to help people who want the treatment with a starting point on how to get it.
There’s just one problem – there’s no central repository on who offers ECT treatment.
Please Help Me with the List of Hospitals that Offer ECT
So I’m asking for your help. If you know of a facility that offers ECT, please let me know in the comments below and I’ll add it to the list. You’ll be helping me and helping others as well. Please include hospitals in Canada and the US.
And, of course, if you have any questions about ECT, also feel free to comment on those and I’ll make sure the answers are here and in the book.
Thanks.

All due respect I don’t see a very important link to information that gives the other half of the story. People need to be informed of facts, and this man knows them. [moderated] I’m just trying to raise awareness just as you are. I don’t call myself a patient, I am in fact a victim.
Hi Liz,
I respect your perspective but I have no respect for Breggin. He’s the biggest antipsychiatrist of them all. I will not have his link here. I do not consider him “the other side” of anything unless you’re talking about “the other side” of rationality.

I believe that the LDS Hospital in Utah offers ECT, though I have not received it. Thank you for forming this list. It has been very helpful to me.
I had ECT at Bryn Mawr Hospital in Bryn Mawr PA.
I had my ECT at Bryn Mawr Hospital in Bryn Mawr PA.
BryLin Hospital is part of the BryLin Behavioral Health System in Buffalo, NY. BryLin provides ECT in their acute care psychiatric hospital in Buffalo, NY (both inpatient and ambulatory care treatments are offered). They have a dedicated staff including psychiatrists, anesthesiologists, psychiatric registered nurses and support staff. Please see the web site for more information at https://www.brylin.com/programs-services/electroconvulsive-therapy/.
This is a wonderful idea! Thanks for the opportunity to share this information.

There is Peace Health in Longview Washington and Providence Sacred Heart in Spokane WA. I am trying to get it for my son who has catatonia, but it is,almost impossible to get it in Oregon because it only has the OHSU clinic and it is backed up for ages.
Hi all,
Note: I am running a survey on real patients’ experiences with, and perspectives on, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). If you’ve had ECT and want your voice heard, please take the survey here. https://natashatracy.com/treatment/neurostimulation-treatment/ect/real-patient-experiences-ect-perspectives-ect/

Can you suggest some links to any?
Thank you,

Natasha,
I am writing a book called ” Mental Ilness and ECT – do you mind if I copy your list and paste it as a chapter in my book?
Hi Natasha,
Firstly, I want to thank you for this wonderful service you are providing. I also wanted to let you to let you know that I have had a wonderful experience at Methodist Specialty and Transplant Hospital is San Antonio TX. I received 6 Unilatral ECT treatments by Dr. Edulfo Gonzalez inpatient, but he will allow me to go outpatient if I have someone accompany me. The ECT staff (from the anesthesiologists to the RNs Diana, Michelle, etc) are also top notch. I was given medicine intravenously during the procedure to prevent nausea, headache, and high blood pressure, and came through the procedure with very little side effects. In fact, I would feel well enough to eat breakfast right afterwards.
I did not take the decision to start Ect lightly, but have had treatment resistant depression for 20 plus years and I did my research. If Aetna would have covered TMS, I might have tried that first, but because they are dragging their feet on this, I could not allow myself or my family to suffer through this any longer. I am on the road to recovery, and I am glad I made the decision I did.
Hi Lori,
Thank you for sharing your success story. I know there are many other people like you our there (although many of them don’t want to admit to it for fear of negative judgements).

Where else do the offer ECT in greater portland area besides Kaiser Sunnyside?
I have called OHSU and they told me they stopped providing those!
Thank you!
Hi there, I have had 20 treatments of ECT, at St. Joseph”s, at West 5 th Campus, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Yes I have some questions, When have you had enough treatments, when is enough : enough? What about the very scary nightmares following ECT treatments? What about the very terrible headaches following ECT treatments?
I’ve just received my first 3 ECT treatments (Pine Rest in Grand Rapids MI) I found your website after searching, because I’m feeling uneasy. Im feeling worse instead of better after 3 treatments, & I can’t pinpoint the cognitive affects but they are definitely noticeable–I’ve lost my typical interests, I feel slower mentally, & of course there are some memory issues. I planned to go back to college, but now I’m worried at my mental performance–I used to be an A student, I don’t feel like I could go back to college with this mind

My treatments were all done at St. Joseph”s West 5th Campus, Hamilton, Ontario ( ECT Treatments)
I have had 15 ECT Treatments now the headaches were brutal with the first 12 treatments not so bad now. ECT Treatments are not only for bipolar people they are for Borderline Personality Disorder patients as well. But Borderline Personality Disorder patient require a more serious regimen of treatments as (BPD) is much harder to treat then bipolar with ECT Treatments. I have trouble with my sleep being reversed plus the headaches and being unable to sleep the night before a treatment.
The doctors rotate throughout giving treatments they are : Dr.Zamora, Dr.Bieber, Dr.Hastey, and Dr.Sabersen and the nurses are: Donna, Colleen, Barb, and Chris. This is a very dedicated team and I am alive to this very day because of them and their care in my doing well and getting better. I owe my life to them and their care.
Yours Truly,
Robert Tymstra
Hi Robert, I had 3 ECT Treatments last week & the doctor suggests 6-12 total. So far the 3 I’ve had have left me feeling worse off & not as mentally sharp as I usually am, making me depressed about that. I’m curious if anyone else felt worse before feeling better? Anyway, the reason I’m writing you, is you mentioned having reversed sleep patterns. I have had reversed sleep patterns most my life & it’s been a huge pain & inconvenience. Did ECT help normalize your sleep patterns? Have you found anything much that has helped your sleep patterns? Thanks
Hi Kay, actually my first 5 treatments were hell, terrible headaches, I had memory problems, temporary loses. They shocked me several times my first few treatments causing multiple convulsions and the headaches were brutal and still are from time to time even taking tylenol 111″s before each treatment as well toteline drugs. As for the time of sleep reversed that has gotten worse still having trouble falling asleep at night. But doing a lot of walking is best it strengthens the brain walking heals the brain from the ECT treatments. I still have lots more treatments to go my Borderline Personality Disorder is holding me back this is why I require so very more treatments. Do all the walking that you can , get a sleep study done to see if you have sleep apnea this could be your sleep problem.
I wish you the best of luck and hang in there it does get better. Rob Tymstra
Hi there, I have personaly had and experienced over 14 ECT ( electroconvulsive therapy ) treatments they have helped not only my mood swings but given me tremendous hope towards the future. I was severely manic depressive and extremely suicidal but these ECT treatments along with the walking and with the fantastic doctors involved as well the psychiatrists Dr.Zamora, Dr.Bieber, Dr.Hasty, Dr.Sabersen, the ECT nursing team Donna, Colleen, and those also that work with them all have had tremendous input into my recovery. ECT therapy is not for everyone but in my case it was the only answer. I have been diagnosed with bipolar and borderline personality disorder. When I am manic or was I would lose all touch with reality and just want to off myself no matter what but the great nursing staff and psychiatrists at St.Joseph”s Charleton Campus 9th and 10th Towers helped along with the ECT team at the West 5th Campus as well.
Dr Jamie Fernandez (excellent) moved from USF in Tampa General Hospital to memorial hospital, they still perform ECT in Tampa General, great results, but is not a lasting treatment you have to continue with maintenance and some meds so it works for you.

For anyone who might care about my opinion, I recommend avoiding Breggin like the plague. He is a serious antipsychiatrist and I don’t believe him to be reputable in the slightest.
Your call.
– Natasha Tracy
By the way, I should have added that I recommend avoiding Danbury Hospital in Connecticut, as well as any hospital that offers ECT.
Susan
Sorry, somehow the website for Dr. Breggin’s information on ECT got deleted. It is: http://www.ectresources.org.
Susan
Danbury Hospital in upper Fairfield County, CT, also performs ECT. I do not believe in this procedure, and have had it forced on me through the probate court system at least a couple of times. It is the nature of the treatment to destroy memories, as well as many other cognitive processes, and I cannot even remember how many times a course of treatment has been administered.
Please see Dr. Peter Breggin’s input on ECT at http://www.org, especially his 1998 paper: “Electroshock: scientific, ethical, and political issues”. It was published in the International Journal of Risk and Safety in Medicine 11 (1998) 5-40, IOS Press. His other website is worth visiting and exploring: http://www.breggin.com. He is a reform psychiatrist who is one of the few voices in psychiatry today who makes sense.
We are living in the technological age. This does not mean that our medicine is any more “safe” or “effective,” or advanced. It is basically an age of high-tech, poisonous and dangerous leeches; the superstition fueled by the god of science, devoid of the true God or any humanness. This is my own opinion, not necessarily Dr. Breggin’s.
He is a scientist who reveals the untruths and the ineffectiveness, as well as the danger, of modern treatments based on scientific grounds. His solution will hopefully become mine, with the addition of prayer and faithfulness to God. He recommends empathy, self-direction, and a host of recovery options that we have come to espouse in the peer-recovery movement respecting human sensitivity, individuality, self-determination, the integrity and vulnerability of both the person and the body, and the natural ability to heal when assisted by people and organizations who also respect these innate human qualities. HIs colleagues have been few and far between over the past half-century, but they are the only ones I really trust, due to the imbedded corruption in medicine today.
Even most well-meaning doctors are affected by this corruption in our age, being misinformed and misdirected, even in their efforts to save lives. This is my opinion. I welcome any who find that these observations resonate with their own.

You are missing a couple in Massachusetts. UMASS Medical Center, Worcester…. HealthAlliance, Leominster (the psychiatrist Paul Epstein just retired and was unsure if ECT would continue there. That was as of March 2015) …. Holyoke Hospital, Holyoke, Pembroke Hospital, Pembroke (associated with the Arbour hospital system in Boston)
There is still no way to search for Hospitals that offer these treatments.
The University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, Vermont offers ECT. I had a course there. And Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine offers ECT as well. I had a course there also.
I have received ECT at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York, NY. I am also writing a book on ECT based on my personal experience and science and history behind it. If anyone has any questions, they can ask me. It was very helpful, more then meds were ever. Its based on a case by case basis because ECT is a serious treatment with general anesthesia every single time. But it is not a miracle cure or a magic bullet of any sort. But as Natasha Tracy remarked – when you are dying – suffering from serious symptoms – ECT is likely to deal with them effectively and swiftly ( a few treatments and you will already notice some relief) .
I live in Las Vegas Nevada, and I also work in the mental health field. I’m also someone who has received ECT. I received it at Montevista hospital in Las Vegas Nevada. I would be more than happy to answer questions, and address concerns.
Hi. I am about to start 10 sessions of ECT at OHSU in Portland Oregon. I am about as scared as I can get.
I am posting to add to your list of places that offer ECT. In the Portland Oregon area, as well as OHSU, Kaiser Permanente offers it for Kaiser folk at it’s Sunnyside hospitial (Kaiser Permanente Kaiser Sunnyside Medical Center, 10180 SE Sunnyside Rd, Clackamas, OR 97015, (503) 652-2880.

Ect is unpredictable and dangerous. It is the equivalent to a closed head injury concussion.
It causes brain injury, memory loss, and permanent cognitive dysfunction. Patients may feel “better” because of the minor euphoria brain damage can generate. Google the latest updates on ECT and brain damage. Check out Peter Breggin’s website. Read about people who have lost 20 years of memory and their careers. Google names like Jonathan Cott, Peggy Salters, Barb Cody, Linda Andre. Order the book Doctors of Deception. Find the Bentall and Reid review of Literature on ECT which concludes it causes brain injury and cannot be scientifically justified.
Do not spend time finding places willing to injure you; you can simply have a friend smash you in the head with a bat multiple times. ECT has its own PR campaign and the lies abound.
Memory loss equals brain damage. ECT can cause massive memory loss. There is nothing medical or healing about electrocuting a delicate brain and sending people into multiple grand mal seizures.
This increases ones risks of epilepsy and Alzheimer’s.

HI, MY NAME IS JACKEE AND I WOULD LIKE TO LET U KNOW THAT “ECT” HAS SAVED MY LIFE. I BELIEVE THAT ONE TREATMENT WILL NOT HELP AND THAT U SHOULD REALLY THINK ABOUT HOW MUCH BETTER LIFE CAN BE. I WAS GIVEN ECT AS A LAST RESULT FROM BIPOLAR/MANIC DEPRESSION/ Goreaphobia. I understand how u must feel not having a Support System Behind U. I thought I had a SUPPORT SYSTEM behind me but it really WASN’T.. I was doing very well when I was on ECT but now I am the One that has failed MYSELF and am looking to find out how to get back in treatment. I haven’t had ECT in over 2yrs. I experienced in myself memory loss that has been returning to me slowly but I feel confused becuz I don’t know how to deal with remembering things. A part of me wants to know my past and a part of me wishes It never returned. I believe Ect side effects are different in everyone. All I can say if that U are able to get ECT u should go for it becuz I would really help. I got mine done in Northern California at Sutter Center for Psychiatry in Sacramento Ca.
At least I can say I tried. I would rather look like a fool and fail than just give up. Thanks to all.
i would like to speak with you about my experience if you’d like
I understand that what I am asking for might seem confusing and please understand that I am very grateful for the time you have taken out of your day to respond to my post.
I am trying to find someone who I can speak with through email or telephone and explain my situation to so I can find out where the best place for me to go to for ECT is. I’m looking for a hospital or a treatment facility that performs ECT, but would be understanding that I want to first try one shock treatment and then see how much of a difference it makes before going through with another shock treatment.
If you, or anyone you know of can just spare a little bit of their time to help me, please let me know, it would mean the world to me and I would be forever grateful. I appreciate your time and kindness, thank you so much.
Scott,
As a consumer and a patient, I would be happy to correspond with you about the benefits and drawbacks of ECT.
I live in a town where there are no local support groups. My doctor only knows of one local place that ECT is done, and she doesn’t recommend that I receive ECT treatment there, which is why this situation is so difficult. I can barely bathe myself and I am so depressed that it is hard for me to nagivate around the internet looking for help. I don’t know how much longer I can keep going, please help me get the help I need.
Hi Scott,
I’m trying but I don’t know what it is you’re asking for. Maybe try a helpline? https://natashatracy.com/get-mental-illness-help/
– Natasha Tracy
I have heard of three cases where after one shock treatment the patient felt better. I understand that most doctors want to sign a patient up for nine sessions, but I believe that it is possible to get one treatment of ECT and feel better, it’s very rare, but it is possible.
Please understand that I don’t have a support system or group of friends trying to help me find a place for ECT, which is why I am reaching out on this site for help. I believe Natasha and other people out there understand that there are situations in life where people reach out for help in a place they feel comfortable and where they know there are others who understand how crippling severe depression is.
I’m not asking for any money or a lifetime friendship. I’m just asking for some kind people to contact me, possibly hear my situation, and just help me find a hospital or treatment center where I can receive at least one ECT treatment and then decide if I want to have more or stop there because I am feeling better.
Please contact me by email, I am a caring and kind person who just needs a little help. My email address is jeremy100jb@yahoo.com
Hi Scott,
I appreciate what you’re doing and I appreciate what you’re going through. I hope you read my below comment.
I also wanted to add that you may wish to go to more active forums to find people that will engage you in active conversations. I wrote an article on the liveliest ones for people with bipolar here: http://bipolar.answers.com/remedies/the-best-forums-for-those-living-with-bipolar
Also, maybe reach out to a local support group? They are more likely to be able to point you in the direction of a good treatment center because they know your local area.
And one more thing, if you just explain your thoughts to your doctor, just like you have hear (you did it very clearly) perhaps he can work with you instead of you trying to go around him? Either that, or just go around him altogether by getting a second opinion. After all, someone will have to be your doctor no matter what treatment center you end up going to.
You have my thoughts and I wish you the best of health. Don’t give up. Things will get better.

Hi, any idea of a location in, or by, Las Vegas, NV that offers ECT. I have been travelling to SLC, UT for wonderful treatment, but would sure like to not have to travel so far. Thank you!
Montevista Hospital 5900 W Rochelle Ave, Las Vegas, Nevada
I am currently trying to find a hospital or treatment center for ECT. My problem is that I want to be able to have one shock treatment, if I feel better after one treatment. Anytime I bring this up my doctor gets upset and agitated by saying that I would have to have 6 treatments in a row without stopping at one. I believe that I have a right to a say in my treatment since this is my brain. I don’t have a support system and my family is not supportive so I am pretty much on my own and I am too depressed and stressed to call around to hospitals and ask questions about the rules of the treatment center or hospital’s protocol. I would like to go somewhere where the electrodes are placed on the head that causes the least amount of memory lost.
If anyone knows of a hospital that does ECT and will stop doing treatments when the patient wants, please reply or contact me. I am in a lot of pain and barely hanging on, I have no one in my life to help me and I just don’t want to be in this kind of pain anymore. Please help me.
Hi Scott,
You have the right to cease treatment at any time, of course. It _is_ your brain and you get to make the call. You always have that right and your doctor can’t force otherwise (unless he has a court order).
The problem is that one treatment likely won’t work so there’s no point in doing it, which is likely what your doctor is saying. I do know of one person who felt better after one treatment, but that is very rare. It’s like saying you’d like to take a week of antidepressants. It just won’t work.
So I would suggest that you commit to the regular course of treatment, but stop at any time during that course if you need to.
For example, I started treatments (I didn’t agree to a specific number ahead of time) and after each one we evaluated where we were. After 9 treatments I elected to stop because it wasn’t working. I gave it a fair shot, and it just didn’t work for me. That being said, had something horrible have happened on treatment 2, I would have elected to stop then.
And, I must say, after one treatment I noticed no cognitive side effects. There were side effects (like pain and headache) but nothing cognitive. I assume that’s what you’re worried about. Those type of effects tend to build up over time so you can judge each treatment and decide if you feel like the next one is right for you.
Now, I’m not a doctor, so feel free to disregard any of the above.
But please believe this: ECT is given to over 100,000 patients a year in the US alone and it helps around 80% of those with depression. But it doesn’t help after one treatment. The average course is between 9-12.
Here is some in-depth information on ECT: http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/1525957-overview
Here is one study that mentions effecacy rates (but they do range depending on the study, particularly if you have a comorbid personality disorder): http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2180554
Good luck.

I know Columbia Presbyterian is already listed, but New York State Psychiatric Institute should also be added as distinct. It is part of Columbia, but is a State funded research facility, where you will receive treatment for free (and EXCELLENT care!). You need to be admitted as part of one of their studies. I just finished a 6 week stay while receiving ECT. They have an outstanding staff and Dr Joan Prudic is one of the foremost authorities on ECT in the world. I have virtually no memory loss.
Awaiting moderation means that if this comment doesn’t meet with approval, it will be removed but that doesn’t change the facts. He prescribes ECT for anyone who is unlucky enough to end up under his care.
Linda,
Actually, “awaiting moderation” means just that. But if I were you, I’d be careful about what kind of remarks you make against an individual publicly.

Ok so I know this post is way late but if you’re still adding to your list:
Mayo Clinic Health System in Rochester, MN and in Eau Claire, WI (and apparently, the Mankato hospital you have already) for sure do ECT.
I have had this done in two different hospitals in Ontario, but I’m not sure if they still do. But these are them: Wellesley Hospital in Toronto (1996) and Southlake Hospital in Newmarket, Ontario in (1998).
Hope this helps for people in Ontario. You might want to ask them if they still do it.

Thank you for doing this. Much needed. The treatments were a God send for me, unfortunatley it only lasted 4 years. I have now found an unusual combination of medications, Marplan, and Nortriptline that is helping me a great deal, I have been treatment resistant for years, and rapid cycler. My doctor here in Ketchum, Idaho worked with Dr. Weeks and Bushnell at UNI to find this combination of drugs that seem to work with treatment resistant patients.
Again many thanks for your work

They are wonderful and will work with insurance. If insurance won’t pay they will work with you on cost and payment plans. This is a full Psychiatric Hospital with the TMS clinic a part of it.
Also in Nevada. Las Vegas

Just want to say I think that you are writing a book on this subject is fantastic. I live in NZ so am outside your boundaries but I so believe that we have to talk about ECT more. There’s far too much stigma attached which just adds to the burden of the people contemplating it. I’ve been throught three series of treatments, and while only one series worked I still think it was the right decision at the time. But I do wish there was more written about the memory issues. They were the biggest deal for me.
Hi Cate,
Thanks for your comment. While the book only lists places in North America that do ECT, the information and the book itself is relevant to most modern countries (in third world countries the situation is a big different).
If you’d like to talk about your memory problems with me a bit and possibly put an excerpt in the book, please contact me: https://natashatracy.com/about-natasha-tracy/contact-natasha-tracy/

Hi Herb,
Thanks for the link, that _is_ very interesting. I might do some more research on it and write and article, we’ll see.
Too bad the study is so small though. The researcher seems to be talking with an awful degree of certainty for all of 15 patients.

Kaiser Permanente-an HMO- does ECT at their South Sacramento facility. It is only for their members, so I don’t know if it can be included on your list. Interestingly, I am a member, but when I got ECT almost ten years ago, they were contracting with Sutter Center for Psychiatry-on your list. There was enough demand in their psychiatric population that they started their own program.
Hmmm, not sure about that one but I’ll take a look.

I’m commuting so I don’t have all the details but, in a nutshell, ECT is performed at Mercy Hospital in Chicago, IL. Oddly enough though Mercy Hospital has a psych unit (inpatient) but no psych docs… so the patient needs to go to (or consult with) University of Chicago Dept of Psychiatry. It likely sounds more complex than it really is.
Mercy has no staff for psych, University has no space to perform ECT in… so… it works out.
Thanks so much, I’ll look into that. (Odd, but hey, whatever works.)

They do an excellent job, and are very patient oriented. I worked mostly with Dr. Weeks who is wonderful and would stay in touch through emails(I live in Idaho), and also worked some with Dr. Bushnell who also was very understanding and informative. They do both in and out patient. Also both doctors kept in touch with my psychiatrist here in Idaho.
Thank you dfor doing this valuable work

It just might be that science still has not caught up with ECT and/or other therapies treating the neurology of the brain.

I had ECT in Jan 2011
Dr. Phlip HInkle is a nut who prescribed ECT for a woman in her 70’s after one 30 min. examination. Naturally the woman went bonkers upon hearing this and thankfully her family stood their ground. Every patient on his side of the floor received ECT. The family was told their mother would be transferred to psychiatric under another psychiatrist’s care, but low and behold, his side was full and Dr, Hinkle had plenty of spaces available. What kind of place is Riverside running?
